A friend has a genuine VW bike rack (the one that clamps to the tailgate) for a Mk 1 Sharan.

Does anyone know whether this will fit a Mk 2 Galaxy ?

I don't have a spoiler on the Gal.

Any advice welcome !

i've got a "standard" one from Halfords that has 6 securing straps/hooks in total.

2 top (at top of tailgate), 2 on side and 2 for underneath bumper

I find this great, and it can easily hold 2 adult bikes plus one junior bike

Can your friend e-mail a photo of the rack, that you can then post on here, so that we can see it?

If it fits a mk1, then i would imagine that it should still fit a mk11.

I would be very suprised if it didn't fit !!!!!!

A rear spoiler can cause a problem, but as you don't have then no worries.....

I am not sure if there is any differences between the various manufacturers in sizes but I am think that the MkII Galaxy has a deeper top to the tailgate with a small spoiler like bump above the rear glass. From front to rear the top of the tailgate on the MkII is roughly horizontal before curving back into the rear windscreen. The depth of the top of the tailgate from the crack between the roof and the tailgate and the rearmost point on the top of the tailgate is 12.5cm on the MkII.

This measurement and shape is important as the Ford (supplied) Galaxy bike rack top mounting consists of a plate that is curved into a U shaped lip at the front that hooks over the leading edge of the top of the tailgate and a C shaped lip at the back that clips over the back round edge of the top of the tailgate. The rubber insert in the clip allows the compression needed to clip it on, so it does rely on being a very good fit as there is nothing to adjust.

Why not phone the local Ford garage parts counter and ask them to look up the part numbers for the bike rack for Mk1 and Mk2? If they are the same.....

I've got a Thule bike rack that clamps to the tailgate and carries 4 bikes, It sits high up so you dont need a lighting board as it doesn't obscure the rear lights, and also you can tow a caravan/trailer with the bike carrier in place, great when we go camping, I bought this off e -bay for

Hi

I have an Atera Linea rear door mounted bike rack. I have used and the bikes have not fell off but I have always been concerned about the brackets that clip over the top of the door.

The length of the bracket is 10 cm from hook to end, the top of the rear door is about 6cm at edge to 8cm in the middle.

The bike rack was for a Galaxy 2000 on.

My galaxy was first registered 15/6/00 does this make it a MK2 or MK1 it definately seems different to older models.

I just wondering if I should have the pre-2000 brackets.

Cheers

The Mk2 didn't widely appear until Sept/Oct 2000. You may, of course, have a very early one that was released to the press or for dealer promotions. If it is a Mk2 it will look like the one in Bleeno's post in this thread: http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.php?showtopic=13826

Thanks

By what you've said it looks like I need the pre 2000 fixing kit and not the 2000 on. I'm not able to view the picture in that post? But I'll have a look in some car parks. There are major differences in the kits so I might get the right one but it'll be about
